Natural Family Photography in Sydney’s Inner West
As a family photographer in Sydney’s Inner West, I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work. I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the traditional owners of the land, and I pay my respects to their elders, past, present, and emerging.
Exploring Beautiful Locations for Family Photoshoots in Sydney’s Inner West
I’m all about capturing family life as it really is — a bit messy, wildly beautiful, and absolutely worth remembering. While I spend most of my time photographing other people’s stories, I also make time to document my own little crew (even if it often means bribing the kids with babycinos). And living here in Sydney’s Inner West? We’re lucky. There are so many vibrant spaces that are perfect for relaxed, natural family portraits.
Whether you’re wrangling toddlers in Annandale, pushing a pram along King St in Newtown, chasing scooters in Marrickville, or enjoying those slow newborn days in Rozelle — as an Inner West Mum, I can tell you I’ve been to every park and playground within a 5km radius of my house and I’ve got you covered with this list of favourite local photo spots.
Why Inner West Families Love Documentary Style Photography
Because Real Life Is Beautiful
Most of the families I work with are after something different — not the formal, stiff portraits we grew up with, but something more honest. They want emotion, connection, and a little bit of magic in the chaos. Documentary style photography is all about that. It’s unfiltered, personal and nostalgic.

Your Neighbourhood is Part of Your Story
There’s something really special about taking photos in places that already mean something to you — your local park, your street, even your front porch. These places hold memories and are part of your story.
My Favourite Family Photo Locations in the Inner West
Callan Park, Rozelle

Best for: Families who love discovering interesting spaces, water views, and golden light
Why I love it: It’s a favourite for a reason — wide open spaces, beautiful old buildings, sprawling fig trees, a bamboo forest, a carpet of jacaranda blossoms in November, views across the Parramatta River, and even a dog beach with some rockpools to explore. At golden hour, the light on the sparkling water of the bay is dreamy. I’ve taken my own kids here (camera in hand) more than once.
Things to know: It’s dog-friendly and there are some rocky clifftop areas – something to keep in mind if you’ve got little explorers who like to roam.
Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, Newtown
Best for: Families who appreciate diversity, colour, community vibe, and urban greenery
Why I love it: It’s got that classic Inner West mix of grit and charm. Right in the heart of Newtown, this park has a wild, lived-in feel that suits documentary family photography perfectly. Families picnic here, kids run wild, dogs chase balls, and there’s always something going on. Camperdown Cemetery is right in the park and is full of historical sandstone memorial structures and tombstones (slightly spooky) and a beautiful big old fig tree, which is said to be the oldest tree in the Marrickville district. There are lots of great murals in the surrounding streets to check out too.
Insider tip: Grab a coffee from a nearby café and let your family settle into their natural rhythm. Weekday mornings are quieter if you’re after a bit of calm.
Whites Creek Valley Park, Annandale
Best for: Families who love relaxed weekend strolls, afternoon glow, and natural ecology
Why I love it: It’s quieter than most parks and has a shady, peaceful feel. There’s a beautiful old footbridge, a small wetland area full of turtles and frogs, community gardens, a mini skatepark, long winding paths perfect for exploring on scooters, and soft light in the afternoon. There’s also an incredible old aqueduct which my kids love to climb on.
Perfect for: Families who want something calm, natural, and a little bit secret. Low-key, gentle family photography with younger kids or new parents.
Cooks River, Marrickville to Earlwood

Best for: Active families with little adventurers on scooters or bikes
Why I love it: This stretch of river is like a quiet escape in the middle of the city. There are grassy banks, bike paths, bridges and small piers, and lovely light in the late afternoon. There are some great playgrounds situated along the river at Gough Whitlam Park and Steel Park (the water play area here is super popular in the warmer months – good luck keeping your little ones dry!).
Good to know: It’s a great spot for active kids — bring scooters or bikes and we’ll roll with it.
Sydney Park, St Peters

Best for: Families who want variety in their photography session without hopping around to different locations.
Why I love it: It has everything — grassy hills, shady woodland with plenty of sticks for building shelters, a fenced community garden, a cycle path just for kids complete with working traffic lights, wetlands with waterbirds (sometimes there is a family of Black Swans here with their cygnets) eels and fish, paths to scoot or bike ride. My kids love to hop across the water on the stepping stones – luckily, they haven’t fallen in …yet. There is also a brilliant playground, and a cafe with great coffee and even better tunes – perfect for an impromptu dance-off!
Things to know: It gets really busy on the weekend and parking can be an issue. There are large off-leash areas and quite a few dogs around enjoying the park too.
Ballast Point Park, Birchgrove
Best for: Adventurous families, older kids, or those wanting a more dramatic backdrop.
Why I love it: This spot has a special kind of industrial-meets-nature charm. There are panoramic harbour views, towering natural sandstone rock faces, and recycled stone features, and unique architectural lines combined with thoughtfully landscaped native gardens.
Good to know: There’s limited shade, so late afternoon is best. Also great for golden hour light on the water.
Newtown, Enmore & Marrickville Laneways
Best for: Families who want something less polished and more expressive
Why I love it: Bold colours, street art, urban creativity, great cafes — these streets have it all. If your family is into street art, the murals and industrial corners here are full of personality and creative vibes.
Bonus: There are great cafés nearby for a treat afterwards (highly recommend).

Your Home

Perfect for: Families with newborns and anyone wanting to document real life, just as it is.
Why I love it: Some of the most meaningful photoshoots I’ve ever done have happened in kitchens, living rooms, and backyards. Everything is at your fingertips. You don’t need to worry about the weather, packing snacks or bundling kids out the door, and naps can happen when they need to. At-home photoshoots are authentic and relaxed — especially for new parents or families with little kids. The snuggles on the couch, snack time at the kitchen table, playing in the backyard — the simple intimacy and beauty of everyday life unfolds spontaneously, completely unique to you.
Bonus: The best thing about documentary family photo shoots is that you don’t actually have to prepare anything. There’s no need to tidy the house, do your hair, or co-ordinate your clothes unless you want to.
